The Human Genome Project

The information on personal HGPs would be very useful for doctors. By looking at a patients HGP doctors could see if the person carried a disease in their genes. This could promote early diagnoses and possibly save many people. Information from the HGP could also be very useful for insurance companies. With hold of that type of personal information, the company could not agree to cover someone that had a very expensive hereditary disease, although this would be very unfortunate for the client, the company would probably be very profitable.
So, only some people should have access to this personal information. Maybe it isn’t such a good thing for insurance companies to know how expensive you will be. Perhaps some people don’t want to know their genome in the first place. Imagine knowing you were going to die of a horrible disease that maybe your grandfather died of. You would spend your whole life worrying. You would probably miss out on a lot of golden moments. However, the personal HGPs would be very useful for "potential mates.” You could compare genomes and predict what your children will look like, and maybe if you’re both recessive for a disease, you’ll consider adopting, because you don’t want to risk the 25% chance odds. But there is also a down side to showing potential mates your genome, because they could become scared and run away if they discover the truth about a disease you carry.
